Our Story

When we were met with having to leave our accommodation we had two choices, rent at great cost or move back in with family. Little did we know that there was a 3rd option for us, Van-life.

We did the usual scouring of the internet looking at vans but after looking at many factory built campervans we were disheartened, they lack proper storage, underwhelming electrics, basic flatpack-esq cabinets so because I trained as an electrician and owned a small building company we thought, why not build our own?

That's when we started our van-life journey with the creation of our first campervan 'Clara' a LWB 2018 Crafter.

We designed 'Clara' to be our full-time home, that meant making sure we had sufficient fresh water supply, ample storage, a comfortable bed, full cooking facilities and a large lounge.

The lounge / bedroom proved the most challenging part due to us wanting a proper full sized mattress while not wanting to compromise on living space for during the day.

Our end product involved a full fixed double bed attached to four actuators that allowed it to extend up to the ceiling, giving a full sized U- shaped lounge area underneath.

We then spent the next 7 months living full time in 'Clara'. This allowed us to save money, that we would have otherwise spent on rent. However, instead of this the savings alongside the sale of 'Clara' helped towards our next plan to build our 2nd campervan.

Which lead us onto our purchase of a 2020 Peugeot Boxer LWB and the start of our second conversion.

We tried to use our experiences from having lived full time in a campervan to help us decide what was more important for us.

We came to the conclusion that we wanted the van to feel more spacious, moving the shower to the corner and enlarging it gave us more open space as well as a more generous shower space with a pull out toilet.

Again, one of the most important parts for us was having a proper mattress and sleeping area with minimum effort when packing away in the morning. Therefore I designed a pull-out bed system, in combination with a side sleeping flare, which allowed me to put the bed side-ways at the back, with two custom made memory foam mattresses.

The next most important item on list for changes was a more substantial off-grid electrical system and going completely gas-less.

We put in a 2kw Inverter alongside a 460ah lithium battery with three way charging, DC-DC, shore-power and 270W of solar. This allows us to go completely off-grid for a minimal of a week without needing to charge, all while using a microwave, induction hob and a low watt air-fryer!
